California ASCD Visits Capitol Hill
California ASCD participated in the LEAP (Leadership for Effective Advocacy and Practice) Institute in Washington D.C. September 14-16. Speakers included Donna Brazile, commentator, who addressed "Moving Beyond Horserace and Gotcha Politics", and Frank Luntz, of Fox News who spoke on "Being Heard on the Hill."  Following two days of training the CA ASCD contingent joined ASCD members from around the country to visit legislators in their Capitol Hill offices. The important messages of The Whole Child, testing issues related to NCLB, and High School Reform were shared.  Dr. Margarita Gonzalez Amador, as newly Elected 2008 ASCD Emerging Leader and California ASCD Leadership Council Secretary, represented California.

Henry Louis Gates Working on Ancestry-Based Curriculum
In the wake of his highly acclaimed PBS series, African American Lives, which traced the ancestry of 19 famous African Americans using genealogical research and DNA science, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is working with other educators to create what he calls an ancestry-based curriculum to teach history and science to African American students in grades K-12. To help them become more engaged, he has been working on a six-week history unit in which kids will interview parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents -- collecting family stories along with census information, tax records, and estate records.  Go to http://www.publicschoolinsights.org/?storyId=22061
