PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Sandy Clifton-Bacon
Educational Leadership for the 21st Century
Leadership has been defined in so many ways. John Maxwell states, "Leadership is influence." Leadership in a world of constant change is hard. It is important that we all take advantage of collaborating with our peers and professional organizations. Your California ASCD Leadership Council is focusing on Leadership through Influence as an Educational Community. Three avenues of Leadership this year include:
Leadership through national and international work with ASCD - California ASCD members are working at the national level with other ASCD leaders to influence national discussions regarding No Child Left Behind, the Whole Child Initiative, National Standards, High School Redesign, 21st Century Skills, Multiple Measures of Assessment, and the Importance of Professional Development
Leadership through influencing and advocating for adequate funding for education - members of California ASCD Leadership Council partnered with the Association for California School Administrators (ACSA) in Sacramento for a two day event attended by over 400 educational leaders (March 22 and 23). The event included a rally and meetings with individual legislators regarding the California budget and the federal stimulus funding for education.
Your opinions and expertise is always welcome. Please feel free to e mail us with your needs, articles or areas of interest.
ASSOCIATION NEWS
Supporting Whole Child Education: Are You on the Record?
ASCD's whole child education Web site now includes a petition campaign targeted at your state boards of education. The petition asks the boards to go on the record in support of policies and practices that ensure all children are healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged. As an Educator Advocate, you can make a difference by signing the petition and forwarding it to others who support policies that ensure what is best for our kids. When your state reaches the goal of 1,000 signatures, ASCD will deliver the petition to your board of education. If you're ready to go on the record, www.wholechildeducation.org to sign the petition.
New Whole Child Resources to Help Your School and Community Make the Grade
ASCD is starting this new year with the firm conviction that it takes every one of us to create the change that our children need. We are committed to providing resources that will support you and your community as you work to ensure that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. The "Grade Your School Too" will help you move your community toward this goal by providing a snapshot of your community's strengths and weaknesses. For further info go to: www.wholechildeducation.org/grade/. Recently, ASCD unveiled an upgrade to the tool which now offers additional feedback, resources, and next steps tailored to your answers. These specific suggestions will help you continue your progress, whether your school and community are struggling to meet the needs of the whole child or are demonstrating whole child successes. Grade your school and community today!
Publicize Your Good Work
Is your school or school district doing any unique curriculum, instruction, assessment, or staff development programs, projects or material development you are willing to share with others? We would like to use the California Electronic Connection as an opportunity for sharing across districts the good works various schools/districts are doing. If interested in sharing information e-mail cascd@cascd.org.
